Recordatio, Latin for recollection, memory or to recall, this word best describes what this cinema club hopes to achieve, bringing films from the past into the present, so that they may continue to transform and lead us into the future.
The Recordatio Cinema Club came into existence as a response to what appears to be a cultural divide between the generations of today and the legacy of generations past. Like an active sinkhole, this divide seems to be sucking up our culture, our memory and our ability to engage – with truth, with each other and with the world. We seem to have lost our cultural custodianship, and in losing this, we are in danger of losing that which should be remembered, unable to purify the present with the past, and lacking what is necessary to shape the future.
Our movie club aims to be more than any other movie club, as it aims to change the world by bringing individuals to an encounter, where one encounters truth, beauty and goodness, and allows these transcendentals to shape and form who we are, and how we are entertained.
This cinema club is for passionate people, where all are open to encounter, and to being inflamed by a new experience, such that each film cannot help but do something to us rather than simply disappear from our consciousness after the credits have ceased. So we aim to screen and reflect upon some of the best films of the past, films that are in danger of being forgotten, films that ought to be remembered and preserved in the living memory of our generation so that they can make a difference in the culture of today and transform the world of tomorrow.
Once a month, a group of young adults gather to encounter a film, and together, to break down and critique the experience, sharing ideas and thoughts and unpacking what we have discovering in watching it. This website is our attempt to share our own experiences with the world. Each experience should not simply end with us, but should continue to be shared, so that others can experience these great films, be formed by them and thus help to form the culture and the world.
